Your Profit Assessment Worksheet: The X-Ray of Your Practice Finances

Before You Fix the Problem, You Need a Clear Picture

In dentistry, you’d never start treatment without a proper diagnosis. You’d take an X-ray, evaluate the evidence, and plan a precise solution.

Your finances deserve the same approach.

That’s why I created the Profit Assessment Worksheet in Profit First for Dentists. It’s your financial “X-ray” — the tool that reveals what’s really going on beneath the surface.

“The Profit Assessment Worksheet tells the truth,”

“And once you see the truth, you can start healing your practice’s financial health.”

What the Worksheet Does

This simple, visual tool takes your Current Allocation Percentages (CAPs) and compares them to your Target Allocation Percentages (TAPs).
It gives you a snapshot of where you are today and where you want to be in the future.

By seeing the gaps clearly, you can create a realistic plan to shift your practice toward financial health — one percentage point at a time.

How to Complete the Worksheet

  1. List your total annual collections.
This is your gross income before any expenses.

  2. Calculate your CAPs.
Determine what percentage currently goes to Profit, Owner’s Pay, Taxes, and Operating Expenses.

  3. Write down your TAPs.
These are your goals based on what a healthy practice should look like.

  4. Identify the gap.
Subtract CAPs from TAPs to see where adjustments are needed.

“The gap isn’t failure,”

“It’s your opportunity for growth.”

Why This Step Is So Powerful

When you visualize your numbers side by side, something shifts.
You stop guessing and start seeing.
You realize that your practice has the potential to support both your patients and your personal goals — if you give it a system that works.

Final Thought

The Profit Assessment Worksheet turns confusion into clarity.
It’s one of the most empowering tools you can use because it replaces emotion with evidence.
